Your child’s progress in the honors class will be continuously monitored throughout each quarter. To remain in the honors class your child must maintain a B- or higher, consistently turn in homework, maintain good attendance, and be responsible for making up any missed work should an absence occur. Classroom Expectations and Behavior: Attendance: There is no substitution for being present in class. Two absences per month results in being more likely to fall behind in school. Think about this: 2 absences per month equals 20 days missed. There are approximately 180 days in a school year so missing only 2 days per month equates to almost 20% of the school year!! That means 20% of the lessons taught you will have missed. That's huge! So make every effort to be here! Should you need to miss school, be sure to visit mrsmichalik.weebly.com and click on “Agenda” to see what you missed while you were absent. Bathroom Passes: Do your best to use the bathroom between classes. If you need to use the restroom during class, fill out your agenda and have it ready to be signed by me. Three passes are allowed per marking period. Bathroom passes will not be issued within the first or last 10 minutes of class. Classroom Assignments: Make sure you have followed all directions before turning in assignments for a grade. Always double check your work! Failing to complete homework will drastically reduce your understanding of the material and your grade! Common Courtesy and Respect: Please be courteous and respectful to all adults and classmates in our classroom. In return, the same courtesy and respect will be shown to you! End of Class: Make sure you clean up your area and return all classroom materials to the proper place. Remain at your desk until the bell rings. Food and Beverages: Clear water is allowed in bottles that do not leak or lend themselves to spilling. No glass bottles permitted. If you should need a snack to tide you over before or after lunch, make sure it is a healthy snack! Lost and Found: Any items left behind will be placed on the table at the front of the classroom. If you’re missing something and it is not there, check the lost and found in the cafeteria. Materials: It is your responsibility to bring the necessary materials listed above to class every day. Other Equipment: Please do not bring headphones, cell phones, ipods, or anything else to class. Leave them at home or in your locker. Tardiness: You must be in the room AND in your assigned seat when the bell rings. A verbal warning will be given after the third tardy. An office referral will be given after the fourth. Use the handbook and discipline code to guide behavior at all times (please read the first 14 pages of the agenda to see all expectations in detail). Class Participation:
Typically the pages in the textbook labeled "Independent Practice" will be assigned as homework to go along with each lesson. Should you score poorly on the homework and want to increase your knowledge and grade, make sure you understand the mistakes you made on your homework – ask questions in class or at home, attend lunch time and/or after school tutoring. Then, you may complete the next page in the textbook labeled “Extra Practice”. Have the adult who helped you with it sign it and attach it to the Independent Practice page you scored poorly on. All Extra Practice pages must be submitted prior to the chapter test. Late/Absent Homework Policy: Late homework will be accepted up to 5 days late with a deduction of 10% for each day that it is late. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check the mrsmichalik.weebly.com website for work that you missed. You will have one day for every day that you were absent to turn your work in. Tests: Each unit has a test that covers all material covered in that unit. Study guides will be given out and ample time will be given to prepare for tests. Completing the study guide is part of your grade! Be sure to ask questions regarding any topics you need extra help with! Test Corrections Policy: Students may make test corrections after a test for ½ point credit per point missed. Test corrections must be done by fixing the incorrect problem and identifying the mistake made originally. Students will only be eligible for test corrections if they have complete notes in their math book for all lessons in the chapter and have turned in all homework for the chapter. Any test corrections not completed during the allotted class time must be completed at lunch time or after school tutoring. Quizzes: Quizzes occur at approximately the midway point of each chapter. These are meant for you to see what topics you understand, and where you need extra help. Some quizzes will be unannounced. Quiz corrections are not permitted; however, if you score poorly on a quiz, you may request to make quiz corrections during lunch time tutoring. Studying for Math: Studying will be necessary in order to master the 6th grade math concepts. The best way to study for a math test is to continue doing additional practice problems and asking for help when needed. Try doing each homework assignment twice! After completing it the first time and making sure you have the correct answers, rewrite each problem and try it again. Completing the assignment twice is a great way to ensure you understand the assignment. There are many great resources available for additional study materials. Our math series has an at-home component with video tutorials. Lunch time and after-school tutoring are also available. Kahnacademy.org is another great resource for reviewing difficult topics. ALEKS.com: All students should strive to work on the ALEKS.com program at home a minimum of three times per week as well as QuickTables. There are 372 items needing mastery in 6th grade math. Each student works at their own pace on ALEKS. Completing 12 or more topics each week will ensure that you are prepared for the midterm, M-Step, and final exam. Please discuss the information and procedures for this class with your child. Contact me at [email protected] at any time throughout the year.
